Williams reveals that a man named Joseph terrorized her when she was a teaching assistant in the Sawtooth Wilderness of Idaho. What are the consequences when we don't speak out? What roles do guilt, shame and doubt play in that decision?

The "not speaking out" consequences show up everyday in the newspapers and the news shows. A person who terrorizes one person will go on to continue the bad behavior again and again. It should be noted the behavior frequently escalates. Those who could have prevented a bad outcome often verbalize they do feel guilt they did not come forward. I would think they would have to have some semblance of shame or guilt if there is an unfortunate outcome. On the other hand - if there is doubt a situation is as it appears do we meddle? This could be one of those "on the other hand" discussions.

First, I have to decide if it's any of my business. I have opinions about how my grandchildren are raised, but it's better if I keep my mouth shut since my son and his wife are good, responsible parents, even if I think the kids won't die if they eat a potato chip. On the other hand, not speaking up can endanger myself or other people, as in Terry's case with Joseph. A lot of bad things will never change if no one speaks up. Terry's environmental group had a lot more success than they would have had if they'd kept quiet.

Not speaking out is the assumption that you are in agreement with what is being said. This can cause consequences when others around you make this assumption.
