Eleanor Roosevelt's position on Segregation

In 1939 Eleanor Roosevelt resigned her membership in the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) for their refusal to allow an African American to perform in Constitution Hall. Could this be the primary significance of her presence in the novel?
