What role do Getey and Fasil, Hirut's parents, play in the narrative of The Shadow King? How does their memory influence Hirut, and Aster?

Hirut's parents are a driving force behind much of Hirut's motivations. Her desire to get her father's gun back is particularly important as his teaching her how to use it bears a lot on the rigid gender roles that prevented Hirut from being taken seriously as a possible fighter. Because Kildane had a relationship with Hirut's parents, this is how Hirut enters his and Aster's household. Aster harbors suspicions about the whole family relationship greatly impacting hers with Hirut.

Getey and Fasil serve as context for the relationship that Aster and Hirut form. They are also included in the whole Memory theme...and what Hirut considers to be important based on her father's gun and teaching. What is shows, come to think of it, is that memory is so unreliable and rigid. The stupid gun didn't work. Times changed, new war, new strategies. Memory can trap you in a past that has moved on.
