What do you think about the relationship between Carlo Fucelli and Fifi?

What do you think about the relationship between Carlo Fucelli and Fifi? Do you think they loved each other? What are the dynamics of their relationship?

I greatly admired Fifi for what she was willing to do to help in fighting the Italians. That she could even endure Fucilli was a testament to her importance to the Ethiopian cause as portrayed by the author. Fifi was one character I would have liked knowing more about.

Fucelli and Fifi manipulated one another both for advantage against one another and for emotional release from their chaotic lives. At times they must have been in doubt about their allegiance and subconsciously exploring each other’s cultures.

Unnecessary addition to the plot. I thought Fifi would carry much more weight when she was originally introduced.

Both Fifi and Carlo were using each other. I think the relationship gave each a sense of power. They definitely didn't love each other. I would have liked to know Fifi on a more personal level.

They used each other. Each recognized weakness and strengths in each other but a slave and master can never love each other. He was a total user and did not think of her as a person. She was a user because she was a spy.

This novel introduces us to many brave women who fight for their country in unique and important ways. Fifi took great risks to infiltrate the Italian camp and keep Kidane informed of troop plans and movements. Fucelli showed his disdain for women by never believing her capable of betrayal.

I found it to be a relationship of convenience for they both sought to maintain some kind of attachment to the normalcy of the past. Fifi was trying to survive during brutal and uncertain times.
