What in your opinion were the particular successes and struggles of Agnes Driscoll? Why might she have eventually resorted "to extreme measures to retain her authority"?

I think she felt the code breaking program was her baby and no one could do it as well as she did. I know she worked hard to improve it and to make it the best it could be. She gave it her all and could not accept the fact that it was time for her to step down. I was reminded of fellow employees who had "out-lived" there position and didn't realize it was time to leave.

I really believe she was treated badly by the Navy. She had no security. After the first world war, when the reservists were let Congress passed a law that only MALES could be taken back. That left her a civilian employee. She was passed over many times. She may have stayed too long, as suggested, but I think she felt she deserved better. I certainly think she did.

I agree with nancyh who said it very well. I felt really bad for her - she really did deserve better. I was really upset reading about her and I don't think she "outlived" her position!!
