Having known people from the depression era, nothing was ever taken for granted. Those able to work would do anything to keep a job, even added responsibility without added pay. If someone could find a way to leave their home and surroundings for some personal satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment, why would they pass up such an opportunity?

I don't really think the depression impacted their decision. It was part of their character that led them to want to strive for better things.

One of the points Mundy made in the book was that because of the Depression women more often felt the need to work to support their families. It seems many of the code girls chose to apply for the job because it paid much better than the salaries they were making as teachers.

I think the Depression had a big impact on their decisions. Some of the women had to drop out of college when the money ran out. Their outlook for the future was very bleak. This was probably the best offer they would ever get and they knew it.
