Absolutely. Though these women were educated and successful in code breaking, they were still seen as the weaker sex, referred to as "gals", noticed for their looks. Some men in this story were the exception in seeing beyond the stereotypes and truly admiring these amazing women for their skills and contributions.

I agree with Laurief. The women probably felt they had to continually prove themselves. I think much more was expected of them and they were always seen as the Weaker sex as the previous reader commented. Also, they were living in a world dominated by men even though there were so many of them. It would have been very difficult

Of course they did. The overall conception was that they weren't as good as the men and they had to prove themselves continually.

Yes, the women had to prove themselves over and over again. The societal view was that women were flighty, emotional, and silly. The code breaking women had to not only do their difficult work, but at the same time constantly show the men that they could work just as hard and just as well as most their male colleagues. The pressure on them must have been enormous.

This was not an easy job for the women and they were certainly challenged in different ways.

The female code-breakers faced greater challenges than men doing the same work. Far less women had employment outside the home at that time--I'm sure the women involved in code work were questioned all the time. How to conceal what they were doing--I'm completely amazed that so many were able to do this.

Men, on the other hand, were the traditional workers. I don't think they had to answer nearly as many questions.

Even though it was almost all women, I'm sure the men thought it was all about them. The fact that the women had to go home and play dumb was so depressing.

Liza Mundy does show the inequality in the hiring practices against women and men. Women were often hired as civilians working within the Army or Navy, and the enlisted men got more recognition, credit, prestige, and more money.
