RE: Do you think Antoine will ever get through to his father?

I think Antoine will not talk to his father. I think he has reached the conclusion that there is nothing to be gained by discussing what he has learned and that he himself can not deal with the adding to his own or his fathers pain over it all. As much as he wants to know what his father knows and feels I think he may feel that it is all just too difficult.

I think that Antoine finally came to a place where he didn't need anything from his father, and he thought that questioning him about his mother would just cause him more pain. I would have liked to see him try to reach out, but I get why, in the end, he just couldn't do it.

Not reaching out to his father may have been Antoine's biggest mistake. His father loved his mother and fell apart after her death. Antoine experienced many of the same feelings after his divorce but was not able to see the similarities in his father's life. It was all about Antoine. Nobody suffered as much as he did...according to him. Because of his self pity he missed out on making a final connection with the one man who might have understood what he was going through. He also did not give his father a chance to make amends. Whether Francoise would have, we will never know.

I don't think so. His father is too closed off. I don't think there is any way for Antoine to really reach him, and although that is sad for both of them, I think Antoine is just being realistic to let it go.

No I do not think that Antoine will ever get through to his father and I doubt if he will ultimately recognize that his father did lose something of himself (and his heart) when Clarisse died. Antoine has spent his entire life fearing and avoiding his father and to confront him with the information that he has discovered can only add to his pain. Why would Antoine want to open this can of worms at this point in his father's life? Antoine should just keep the information to himself. It is sad though, that he can't even provide some basic familial comfort to his father and reconcile the feelings that they have for each other (before his father dies).

No. The father experienced a betrayal, the son and daughter did not. So I do no think that the father would be open to his son's overture.

I think so much distance excisted between the two men that neither one of them could bridge the gap let alone discuss the issue of Clarisse.
