In Lane's situation, would you have enlisted in the U.S. military?

While working at the camo-net factory, Lane ponders the irony: "Here they were, unjustly imprisoned by their own country, contributing to the fight for freedom and democracy." In Lane's situation, would you have enlisted in the U.S. military? If drafted, would you have refused to serve

His enlistment established beyond a doubt his patriotism. Perhaps his need to enlist was greater than many. Yes, I would hope I would have done as he did!

I agree! Lane had a choice and he made it...maybe not for his family, though. I hope that I would have done the same thing in his position.

I think in Lane's position you might want to prove to everybody that you are loyal and love this country and to join the military you can prove this. He was also faced everyday with the humiliation of being Japanese, and must have provided a certain amount of initial relief.

I totally understand why Lane would want to enlist - though I don't know if I would have been big enough to do it myself. He saw himself as an American citizen and wanted everyone to know where his loyalties lay. My only thought was why he did it once Maddie was in the camp with him? He made it sound like the enlistment was sort of out of his control, but I assume he could have said no if he had wanted to. I think it might have been more in his character to stay with Maddie, especially after the ways the U.S. government treated him and his family.

As much as I hate war for any reason I think if I had been Lane I would have enlisted. Imagine, you were basically in a concentration camp. The only hope, at the time, of getting out was to volunteer for the war effort. What more could you say to someone you loved? A difficult choice but believable.

In Lane's situation, I probably would have felt that I had no other choice in order to prove my patriotism and loyalty to his country. He like so many other people of color when oppressed, enlist to improve their situation and to prove themselves "worthy" to the majority.
