The death of Beacon provides a contrast to the relationship that she has with her husband; the crow community also acts as a contrast to the superficial families with which Meri finds herself surrounded. It is interesting that the observations start as words, then migrate to pictures..

The crows stuck with Becon to the end as Meridian did with Alden but the entire crow community remained close unlike her friends and family

The crows created their own family community and looked after each other and truly grieved when one of their own died. I think Meridian envied them that.
