I very much hope so! Of all the characters in the book, I think they are the most honorable. In spite of having very real grievances against their masters, they are loyal and helpful to Placidia when she most needs help. We know from history that going north into freedom did not always result in equal opportunities or pleasant living conditions for freed slaves. There were plenty of bigots in the north as well as the south.

I would agree with Anne C. I certainly hoped so. Reading other novels, like The Underground Railway, would certainly suggest that the road ahead for them would be very difficult. As characters though, they do offer the reader hope and optimism that there are good people. Despite all the trauma, the Major and Placidia made a good life together. I like to think that the same would be true for Abner and Nerissa.

I think that is left up to us to fill in the way we'd like to believe, knowing that in reality, as Anne C. points out, Emancipation and the Union victory did not guarantee a good future for black people anywhere in America, and it still does not, sadly.

Yes, I think so. When slavery ended many of the ex-slaves went looking for loved ones/family/friends so they can could be together. I would think that this would happen between Abner and Nerissa despite all of the obstacles that would be thrown in their way and scars they had to bear from slavery.
