George Barlin says of Evelyn Bay, "Places like this, they need to be tight-knit to work. Once the trust is broken, they're stuffed. Whether people see it or not, the writing's on the wall." What do you think he means by this? Do you think this is true?

I do believe this is true. Small towns subjected to extreme weather need to rely on one another to survive. Once that trust is broken, it breaks the community. People turn on each other. That was evident in how the community took to the boards to spread gossip and lies about their neighbors, even when those lies had nothing to do with what happened. The town turned on itself and it is likely not to recover, at least not what they had before. Evelyn Bay was stuffed, as George said.

RE: George Barlin says of Evelyn Bay,

I don't agree completely with either Scribbling Scribe or George Barlin. Yes, in the interim, the community seems to be falling apart at the seams because of the gossip and lies that are being spread through social media; however, as the novel concludes, it seems that many of the characters are finding resolution and there is genuine hope that the community will be able to move on in a positive way. The main characters, for sure, all have hope ahead of them, and the side plots such as the moving of the police station even seem positive because the past has now been resolved and it as well as Chris Renn will not be there as a reminder. Ash is resolving his issue with George Barlin so there is hope that they, too, will move forward. When the major figures of the plot move on the community will have to look elsewhere for its chatter - as they no doubt have in the past. Evelyn Bay is a summer community, has been for years, and it will remain as such, but now with a more peaceful history and perhaps a new cast of characters coming forward to take the lead.

I believe loss of trust can cause tumult and chaos and gossip, but I do not believe that trust cannot be rebuilt. Many of the grudges and misunderstandings affecting main characters in the novel have been explained and disproved by the novel's end. Long held suspicions have been laid to rest, and a culprit has finally been identified. If the true story of what happened to Gabby, Bronte -- and Finn and Toby had not finally been explained, George's comment may have proven true. Now that the actual facts have been revealed, the townspeople should be able to finally put the past behind them.

RE: George Barlin says of Evelyn Bay, &...

In small towns people need to be helpful, or tight-knit - volunteer fire departments for example - but they also need to curb their tongues. Gossip and rumor can hurt a small community, and the people living there, quicker than anything else. There is no room for rude and hurtful - people need to pull together.
