Do you think Ash's relationship with Olivia will survive?

Do you think Ash's relationship with Olivia will survive? Why or why not?

RE: Do you think Ash's relationship with Olivia will survive?

It's unlikely, I think. Now that Olivia and her mother know the truth, they can move on. I would imagine that Olivia would return to her life in the city, but I can't see Ash leaving Evelyn Bay. His life and gardens are there.

No, I don't. Ash is emotionally and financially enmeshed in the Evelyn Bay community. I think he's emotionally stunted. On the other hand, Olivia has matured since leaving Evelyn Bay and seems to only be back to help and support her mother.
I think once she feels her mother no longer "needs" her, Olivia will leave.

RE: Do you think Ash's relationship with Olivia will survive?

I think they have a stronger connection than meets the eye in the book. Like Kiernan found his "peace" with Mia and she helped to make things better for him, I wonder if the same can be true of Ash and Olivia. I thought the fact that Ash went and apologized to George at the end of the book and was considering working on his garden for him showed a lot of personal growth. And towards the end (in a flashback) if I remember correctly it was Bronte who commented on how they could be really sweet when they're together. I think they could make it work but I think it would take a lot of work on both their ends.

That whole town needs a full-time therapist.

Doubtful. Many of the characters of "The Survivors" seem frozen in time to that moment 10 years ago when tragedy visited the community. Unless they made conscious efforts to address the trauma, they seem to be stuck which is how I viewed Ash and Olivia's relationship. Hopefully the catharsis at the end will help some of these characters move beyond that inertia to lead more fulfilling lives.

I don't think it will. The whole town is in turmoil and I can't see Ash leaving and I can't see Olivia staying. She seems to have matured way beyond him.

It is unlikely that their relationship will survive, Ash will not leave Evelyn Bay but Olivia has no future there.

This is a hard question. I really think it could survive. Ash seemed to be growing up toward the end of the book and I think Olivia has a need to settle down. They certainly seem to be very fond of each other

RE: Do you think Ash's relationship with Olivia will survive?

I agree with judithc that this is a tough one! It is too bad that George didn't give Ash "the talk" when he was 18. I do think Ash shows willingness to grow after hearing the stark truth in The Surf and Turf. In fact, apologizing to George instead of holding onto his anger and allowing it to control him and his actions shows promise. But I think Olivia reveals more about what she may do 1) by taking master's courses on-line while she moved back home and 2) during her conversation with Kieran at the cemetery. She seemed to believe that staying in Evelyn Bay meant "game over". She described Ash as fun. The relationship was easy because Ash already new everything. The strongest endorsement for their relationship came from 20 year old Bronte. I know my views about relationships were a lot different at 30 than they were at 20. So I really think it will be Olivia who decides what will happen. Can be happy as a wife, mother, and waitress in Evelyn Bay? Will it be enough? If the answer is no, I think she will go back to Melbourne and continue the life she started for herself there.

RE: Do you think Ash's relationship with Olivia will survive?

Of course there's no way to definitely know the answer to this question, but I am hoping that it will. Now that the real reason for Gabby's death is known, perhaps Olivia and her mother will both be more at peace, and Olivia, having found love with Ash - at least according to what Bronte has observed - will be able to find a more peaceful existence in Evelyn Bay. Or, Ash - having found someone he really cares for - will be able to make the leap to leave and go with her if she returns to her original work. I do not agree with many who say they have no future. I think both have grown throughout the novel and their future is dependent upon what brings them happiness and contentment - not necessarily education or money.

RE: Do you think Ash's relationship with Olivia will survive?

I don't believe it will. I think the only reason Olivia is in Evelyn Bay is because of her mother. Trish has lost one daughter and Olivia doesn't feel she can leave her all alone and go off to the city to work at her chosen profession. Olivia's relationship with Ash does not seem to have a lot of depth. By contrast, during the course of the novel, Kieran and Mia's relationship grows deeper while Olivia's and Ash's just seems to coast along. I don't think Ash has any interest in leaving Evelyn Bay while Olivia can't wait to get away.

I believe Olivia hopes to leave Evelyn Bay again at some point in time, and it seems that Ash has no desire to do so. While they offer each other support and comfort at a time when both are needed, I think Olivia will ultimately feel the need to move on.

I’m not sure but I think they have a chance. Ash seems to be maturing and growing by the end of the book. Olivia seems to be preparing to leave by taking courses but learning the truth about the day her sister disappeared doesn’t just fix everything. I’m not sure a daughter who gave up her career in Melbourne to come home to help her mother will leave again anytime soon.

RE: Do you think Ash's relationship...

I doubt that this relationship will survive. Olivia was only drawn back to Evelyn Bay to help her mother - Ash is a permanent resident of Evelyn Bay by choice, with no desire to leave. Olivia wants for more, Ash is content with what he has and what Evelyn Bay has to offer. Neither one is wrong, they are just incompatible.

It will survive, exist, but not grow. They come from 2 different worlds. Ash is still where he grew up. His world is small with the same places, people and their expectations of him. She left that world. She will always be aware of what she is missing outside of Ash's world. He will have no idea.
