Yes, he was paying her a high compliment....Her wisdom was paired with openness plus an acceptance of
circumstances-- age, widowhood, and genuine care for Thatcher, Polly.

Yes, I thought that was a brilliant image of Mary. She had the wisdom and character that comes with maturity anf hardwon experience, but also kept alive the curiosity and sense of wonder of youth.

Yes, I agree that Mary possessed an openness, willingness to explore/discover, and understanding of human nature as well as nature outdoors. Thatcher seemed to be summarizing what Mary Treat brought to his life and how much he valued it.
