Do you think there's any truth, either then or now, to Erle Halliburton's comment that women have been dependent on men for so long that "they are handicapped"?

Oklahoma businessman (and outspoken critic) Erle Halliburton said, "Women have been dependent on men for guidance for so long that when they are put on their own resources they are handicapped." Do you think there's any truth to this, either then or now?

Other than the fact that Mr Halluburton was an ass, he isn't totally wrong. I think there are many women who do not feel fulfilled without a man in their lives and who are unwilling to make decisions or take any step without the approval of that man. Is that a handicap? Not necessarily--it is if the woman is miserable and feels unfulfiiled in other aspects of her life. If she is content and happy, it is wrong for anyone to judge her or look down upon her. By the same token, it is totally wrong to judge or look down upon a woman who makes decisions and takes action without the " approval " of a man. Each person must live their life as they think is best for them--man or woman--they owe no explanation to the world.

I couldn’t stand this guy! I believe that men like him in this time period just made up crap about women to keep them in their place. Women walked a very fine line in everything they did. I read that in his personal life he had several children with his mistress and even his mistress’ daughter. So I wonder if he might have been a bit handicapped in his thinking!

Some clinging vine type of women still exist today. They won't drive an automobile, keep a checkbook or do
anything as an independent person.

Alycet--that is a choice they have made and should not be sneered at. It certainly does not mean they are handicapped and many of them might surprise many people in a tough situation.

I don't think they are 'handicapped'. I think there is a lot of perception that women are handicapped who make the choice to depend on a man and not make their own success outside of their home. I think it is fine for women to make the choice to depend on a man, but they shouldn't be viewed as handicapped.

No truth to it. There have always been independent women. I have been alone since 1980. I have raised two boys that are now grown men. I have always worked am now happily retired and enjoying giving back to my community by volunteering.

This may have been true years ago, but not today. Women are now demonstrating they are as capable as men. In my mother's generation there were many women who were too dependent on their husbands. One female relative of mine did not know how to write a check, or make out a bank deposit. When her husband passed away she had to rely on my mother for help. I hope that this is the exception not the standard today.

I think Halliburton was a product of his time. Most women at that time were dependent upon men because that’s the way society was structured. I am sure that most men and women would have agreed with him even if they didn’t say it out loud. There are still women who feel incomplete without a man, but I am thrilled that more and more women are independent today.

In that time it was more true than now, but women did yank at the yoke and begin to make a place for themselves in the world. Halliburton was a big man with big money and a big mouth!

It depends on the situation. As it has been mentioned in this post, every situation is different. Halliburton was probably like that dye to that time period, which has been mentioned as well.
