How would today's modern communications such as mobile phones and email have changed this story? How have these technologies changed the way you communicate over the past decade?

How would today's modern communications of mobile phones, email, and satellite media have changed this story? The relationship between Danielle and Jon? The war itself? How have these technologies changed the way you communicate over the past decade?

Certainly would have made communication easier as well searching for her son. Technology aides in location a person world wide 365/24/7. GPS, reverse phone search, locating people, background check. Helps.

Modern technology would make this a totally different story. What makes this tale so interesting & real is that these devices did not exist during that time period. The movie, The Imitation Game helps to illustrates that.

The scenes of trying to find people after an accident or disaster would have been different and not as tense. I think it is becoming more and more difficult for young people to imagine not being able to be in touch in an instant. Technology has brought communication down to the text level. It seems virtually no one even does newsy emails any more. I'm not sure it is a better world.

It's funny that this question was posed as I found myself thinking how much faster and more efficient things would have been if there was todays modern technology as I was reading the story. I think most of the misunderstanding between Jon and Danielle could of been avoided by use of the telephone and emails. The war itself would have been totally different and maybe a different outcome. Todays weapons used in war are miles beyond what they had available then and the communication factor alone could of saved and probably also lost lives depending on who used it and how. Another area that would of been greatly effected would of been Danielle's search for her family and especially her son. All admissions to hospitals, aid organizations and travel are electronically recorded and tracked. Not only could she of searched for her son more effectively, but her son could of searched for her and his background when he lost his memory.

I find myself wondering how differently the entire courtship between Jon and Danielle would have gone. The art of writing letters (and the thoughtfulness that entails) has been lost to this latest generation. Do we fall in love more quickly because we can communicate more quickly?

As with any story set before the age of technology, things would have been radically different today.

It would obviously be easier today than during the war. However, it is still difficult to find missing persons during disasters. Electronic communications can and are not in service. This book would not have nearly the same impact if it were set in modern day.

It literally would have changed everything from the way the war was fought (EX: Remember how the worldwide media rushed to the Gulf War and other wars since?). It may well have effected WWII itself. Our instant communications make us into people who demand instant gratification instead of people who used to write heartfelt letters that were saved and treasured, and we didn't expect answers immediately. Finding Nicky and other family members would have been much easier (presuming that technologies were not disabled).

War is not a natural time, and many horrendous happenings still occur. Today's technology would probably be a mixed blessing.

With the modern communications, the story would have change so much that there might not have been much of a story. She might have been able to keep in phone contact with her grandmother to know they were leaving. She and Jon would probably have talked every day. There is probably a computer list of all lost children.

Kara brings up an interesting question: "The art of writing letters (and the thoughtfulness that entails) has been lost to this latest generation. Do we fall in love more quickly because we can communicate more quickly?"

I think today's technology enables people to fall in love more quickly, but is it real love or infatuation? The process of writing and mailing letters is, of course, slower and allows for more thoughtfulness between "postings" and it seems to me that this slower process would allow two people to really get to know each other more deeply than today's texting.

Back in my day (the 80s ;) ) while we didn't have instant communication, my fiance and I communicated through letters and phone calls and I think it allowed us to get to know each other better. Because phones had to be plugged in it required staying in place and, I think, made me pay more attention. I spent entire evenings sitting on the basement stairs where there was nothing to look at or get distracted by and so I paid close attention to what was being said. We're still going strong 32 years later.

We have seen how technology aids in reuniting people after natural disasters and in theaters of war. Listings of missing and found persons are checked and updated instantly allowing families to reunite. Today we know what is going on in any corner of the world with just a few taps on a phone. I find myself sending a quick text instead of calling. On a trip to Spain next month we will be texting and sending pictures instantly instead of the good old post cards.

RE: How would today's modern communications such as mobile phones and email have changed this story? How have these technologies changed the way you communicate over the past decade?

I don't think the story would have worked with modern communication technology. There's an immediacy found with texting via mobile phones and sending emails. If cell towers are down due to a natural disaster or blackouts, then it might work, but I just don't feel that there would have been the tension and drama between Danielle and Jon. I live in a mountainous state with spotty cell phone reception in the mountains and valleys; it doesn't help that this is a sparsely populated state, so towers are generally found in the larger cities and towns. When traveling throughout the state there may be stretches of highway without cell phone reception and the inability to communicate with others while on these roads can be disturbing. Even my elderly parents, now in the early 80s, have gotten used to being in constant contact with family and friends as a result of mobile phones. Most people find it hard to "disconnect" from their tech devices even if it is just when sitting down to a meal, so I can't imagine living in a world without this accessibility. Could I live in such a world? Yes, but it is still hard to imagine.

Certainly Danielle would of been under a lot less stress. She would not have had to patiently wait to get answers that her heart long for. However, I think it would haven taken away from the story. The "not knowing" element works better, keeps the reader turning the pages.

This story wouldn't have existed with modern communications. So much of the story was about not knowing - not knowing where her son was, if her husband was alive, etc. If she could have found out by texting someone, there wouldn't have been a story.

The story would have been completely different. As historical fiction communication had to be relevant to the day. Telegraphs would have speeded things up, but probably not open to all during the war.

The major difference in Danielle's life would have been keeping in touch with her family. Her love affair with Jon keeping in touch would have changed her life.
