Paula says that at one point her greatest comfort was the smell of orange peel and campfire smoke in her mother’s hair. Which aromas, foods or sounds do you personally associate with comfort?

I love the smell of vanilla. I burn vanilla candles in my home, and it is my favorite body lotion. I also like the smell of pine needles. That reminds me of Christmas and hiking in the spring and summer.

The smell of baking bread. My mother taught me at an early age how to bake bread and we would fill up the house with that wonderful smell, especially at Christmas.

Later on she talks about the orange peel and marijuana smoke smell. You get a whole different feel for the smell of "motherhood".

The smell of baking bread reminds me of my mother since she baked bread every day. The scent of mesquite and the desert and campfire smoke reminds me of our many camping trips in Arizona in the 50s when I was just a kid.

The smell of home cooking and baking. The smell of homemade bread and cinnamon rolls as I grew up in the country- also the smell of fresh strawberries. My dad worked on the railroad-he came home smelling like cresote I associate that smell with him. He died when I was 16. The home cooking and bread reminds me of Mom and grandma.

It's funny to me, but Chicken noodle soup with drop noodles and cinnamon toast are real comfort food for me. But as far as smells from the past, I don't like them. They are just too bittersweet.

The smell of cooking (onions in butter, chicken soup, roasting turkey). Also incense in church, pine needles and the way my grandmother smelled - can't describe it in terms of perfume or food - more just an aroma of sorts. haven't thought about her aroma for a long time and this discussion triggered happy loving thoughts about her.

As I read this question, I found myself stopping and quietly reminiscing about the smell of baby powder and the touch of my Grandma Miller's soft cheeks when she kissed you hello or goodbye. I remember smell of the campfire as Daddy toasted our bread each morning of a camping trip along the San Lorenzo River. And Mom's Blue Grass perfume that she used daily after her bath. All bring back good childhood memories.
