Paula attempts to tread lightly on the romance front with Birdwine, despite their mutual attraction. She learned in foster care that "Breaking things was what I did best." What do you think about Paula's relationship with her ex-lover/private investigator? We see in Paula's future that she does get married. Do you think she married Birdwine?

Despite the chemistry, I don't think Paula sees herself as a person who can take a risk on a relationship. Men were in and out of her life. Her mother ended up out of her life. Her best friend in the boarding school/foster situation ended up leaving her. She's a person who gets left or who gets taken away. I think she purposefully opted for a relationship with Birdwine, who has a drinking problem, because the chance for a real, good relationship isn't actually feasible. I don't envision her marrying him because he is more a representation of her past choices than ones that make sense for her new present with her sister.

I think she does marry Birdwine. She realizes that even with all his flaws, he is totally there for her when she needs him. I like to think they have a family with Julian and Hana. And maybe one day Birdwine meets his son.

The author leaves this up to us and our own imagination. I would like a happy ending for this relationship. I think they do get married. Since Birdwire has opened up to Paula and told her about his son I believe that then he gets his life together and stops drinking. We know that he has loved Paula for a long time so he has a lot to gain. Paula is now opening up to others in her life after realizing she has siblings. I like happy endings!

One of the main themes of this book is one's ability to grow and change and the power of family to help us do that. Although the identity of Paula's husband is left vague, I think it is reasonable to assume that she married Birdwine. Why else would the author tell the reader about the future marriage?

I felt fairly sure that Paul's husband was going to be Birdwine, and yet I had a shred of doubt. I feel as if the reader left this possibility open to make the book satisfying to a wider audience. people CAN change, so maybe Birdwine got his act together. Without a drinking problem, life can be very different.

I think Paula is very cautious in opening up to men. I think when she finally realizes that she had been in love with Bird wine and also when faced with the almost fatal encounter at the bar, she realizes it's time to put down that wall. I believe she does end up marrying Birdwine.

I do like a happy ending, so I hope she married Birdwine. I believe when he told her he loved her and excepted Julian, this gave her permission to accept him with his flaws.

I'm with rebeccar on this one. Certainly at the end of the book there's a lot of focus on changing destructive behaviors by both Paula and Birdwine, so there seems to be a foreshadowing of a continuing and positive relationship. But given their past history there's room for doubt. The author leaves it to the reader to construct an appropriate fantasy finish.

As a foster parent for many years, I have seen first hand when dealing with older teens that have been in the foster care system for years their distrust of relationships due to the seemingly revolving door of families they've lived with over the years. Yet the strongest pull for almost all of them is their desire to have their own family. Since the storyline revolves around an individual's ability to grow, change and the power of family I am confident that Paula will marry Bird.

I liked this book - had a hard time putting it down, but from the first it reminded me of a Janet Evanovich. Even had a "Ranger" for the "Stephanie Plum" character.

I think she married Birdwine because she realized that she loved him. Despite her independent ways, I think she was ready to give that up because family was important to her and she realized it was to Bird also. I think they were both ready to just relax with each other and live a more normal married life.

I think she married Birdwine. This might be wishful thinking on my part because it's the ending I want. It took her so long to let Birdwine into her life and admit she loved him that I can't see her getting that far involved with someone else so quickly. This is one of the reasons I think Birdwine is the one she married.

Birdwine reminds me of Ranger in the Janet Evanovich novels.

I think she married Birdwine. They opened themselves up to each other. She knew his strengths and weaknesses. And he knew hers. And they loved each other. I think they got married.
During their relationship through out the book, I think it is a typical relationship of two wounded people.

Paula sure did marry Birdwine—love finally won them both over to creating the family they felt comfortable with when Julian, and later Hana, appeared in Paula's life.

I am the bad one in the post here. I hope they get married but, as I person in recovery, Bird's chances at getting sober aren't great considering his past record. Paula, Julien and Hana deserve a stable, loving man in their lives. If it's Bird, that's fantastic! But, if it's someone else, that's okay, too.

I hope so. They have a connection that will always be there. It's also about loving someone and accepting their mperfections. There are big obstacles to overcome, but don't we all have them?

I believe she marries Birdwine. I feel she finally overcame her fear of future rejection and finally trusted that love won't dessert her even if she makes mistakes

I think Paula wants the relationship with Birdwine to work but is worried he will leave her much like Kai left all her relationships.

Since they admitted to each other their darkest sides, I think they probably did get married. She seems comfortable in their relationship. With Julian and Hana in her life, would she have taken the time to get to know another man as she knows Birdwine?

I think that she does end up marrying Birdwine. They each bring their own baggage to the relationship but they seemed to be able to get past that to what was most important - their feelings for each other.

I believe they married. I am also positive about the future and hope that Julian turns out to be stronger and Hana has a positive upbringing. I guess I can fantasize.

Maybe I am a "Pollyanna" but I agree with daryl that somehow she and Birdwine find happiness together, Julian becomes the rock she can depend on - he brings out the softer side to Paula and that together as a family Hana will have a positive life experience. Birdwine and Paula have a strong pull for each other and I feel that together they can be a whole, each putting into their relationship their strong straits.
