I think Paula's lifestyle - the moving, her mother's constantly changing boyfriends, the time in group home, gave her a certain flexibility and an ability to adapt to rapidly changing conditions. She certainly goes with the flow in her relationship with Birdwine. Her mother seems to be the only thing she held as a constant. I was not surprised.

I was not surprised by her acceptance of her brother and sister. Her mother who she had not seen for many years had died and I think she was ready to have a family. She had the guilt of thinking she was the reason her mother was sent to prison. She sent her mother money every month to try to make amends. Then later the guilt of knowing her mother had to give her infant son up since he was born in prison. I think she accepted her siblings to right the wrongs that had happened to her family and also because she needed their love as much as they needed her.

I was not surprised about Paula's acceptance of Julian and Hana. In my opinion I think Paula is growing as a character and wants some sort of stability and family in her life.(not realizing this at first) Paula has been very insecure and at times has self-esteem issues. Paula certainly has shown that she is very capable when it comes to her career and career choices.

I was not that surprised by her acceptance since I feel like she almost feels obligated to take care of them since she was responsible for putting her mother in jail.

I was not surprised. She has been alone for many years and I think it took her awhile to except that she had a family. Because of her upbringing she did not know how to react to the love of others.

No, I was not surprised. Paula had learned to adapt to many situations, and having a brother gave her someone to belong to "besides her cat".

I was not surprised. I think she thought she owed it to her mother to raise her little sister and accept her brother. I think she also embraced them as a way to be close to the mother she lost.

I wasn't surprised that she accepted her brother and sister. Now she has a real family. Not just the "sisters" in the home. I have friends who have learned in their 40's and 50's that they had an older sibling out there that their mother had in her teens and gave it up for adoption. They all accepted the siblings at least the ones they could find.

No not surprised at all. It seemed to be what she needed to go on with her life in a positive loving way including a partner.

Paula, by going through pain from being alone, was drawn to the family made up of Julian and Hana, which was cemented by her own mother.

It took her a while to really believe/accept that she had a brother and then a sister; it meant she had to reconsider who her mother was and what her relationship to her had been.

I think it made her character seem more real and driven by something innate. Though it did surprise her, I was happy for her since her mother had forsaken her. I can't imagine how she felt having no one.it was interesting how the author mentions her one "friend" as saying he was too busy with a new baby etc... Then we never really hear of him again. Some friend.....

Julian was a tough one for she was responsible for his adoption. I think coming to grips with her actions helped her let go of the past and that was the beginning of the healing process which in turn opened her up again to love.

The knowledge of having a brother and sister was like a blessing for Paula. She finally had family she could relate to.

Considering how guilty she felt for her mother ending up in prison I was not surprised at all by her acceptance of Julian. I think she felt badly for him suffering the consequences of the actions of Kai & Paula. I didn't think Paula would be anything but accepting of Julian.

I was not surprised by her acceptance, particularly for her half-sister, Hana. I think that female protection instinct, especially for a young girl, is very realistic. I think Julian was more of a shock and seemed like more of a disruption to the world that she had built, but as that world started to seem empty, both of the siblings are a new opportunity and a way to reconnect with her mother's spirit.

I was not surprised by her acceptance of Julian. This was another connection to family and her mother that she was missing in her life. He was kind of cuddly as well.

I was not surprised in the least. Despite her assertions that she wanted no committed relationships as an adult, she mourned her broken relationship with her mother and wanted to find a way to change history to avoid the loss.
