What do you feel is the significance of the title?

I feel that it indicates Peter's own questioning. Today he is a boy, but tomorrow?

There is a song by Anthony and the Johnsons with that same title, "For Today I am a Boy." Some of the lyrics:

Some of us grow into ourselves in a dramatically different way than we were expected. Some of us grow into ourselves in a way that does not veer far from expectations. Either way, today's self is different than tomorrow's, and we can only hope that tomorrow's comes a little closer to our best and most fulfilling.

Certainly the title implies hope for tomorrow, but as we read the novel it also can be read as the hopelessness that Peter feels in the moment.

For the time being I will be what is expected of me, but I will live my own life my own way one day.

I will try to be a son for the time being, but one day, I will be me.

I love the title! Thanks dianec for sharing the lyrics. I agree with others in the view that Today I am a boy, but tomorrow holds a different future for me. That is what Peter holds onto to give him hope.

Thanks for the lyrics. The epigraph gives the reader a glimpse of the significance. After I completed the story, I think the title is fitting - to me the significance is Peter's dilemma. Peter wants to be a beautiful woman; knows in his heart that he is but for today he is unable to express this gender. There is hope in the song's lyrics.

A sign of hope. Peter resigned the fact he was a boy with the hopes of change at some point.

The title shows the fact that he is a boy, but suggests that he's not resigned to it.

I'm not yet finished with the book, but the title seems to be a reflection of Peter's resignation that he was born a boy. He's a boy now, and not comfortable with it. Maybe on another day Peter will not be a boy.

dianec wrote out the words for the song by Anthony and the Johnsons. For Today I Am a Boy. it was written in the book with the first two stanza's. I thought it was perfect and beautiful and a poem that just matched the book right on.

He is stating the obvious. However saying "today" perhaps means that it won't always be that way.
