What kind of faith and spiritual practice is Quiara developing as she enters womanhood? Do you think the faiths she inherits and encounters are at odds with each other? Do you think they can coexist?

I think Quiara has a mixed salad of beliefs and spiritual practices. I’m not sure how they could coexist without creating confusion.

I agree with melanieb but also think that in her maturity, Quiara has become more accepting and even has embraced her mother's religious observances. In the same way her language and her music is a hodge podge reflecting the diversity in which she grew up, her religious beliefs have evolved in the same fashion. I do think they can co-exist as a cafeteria-style religion which many of us may have under the surface.

I've always thought that each religion has some truth behind it, with no religion being completely right and none being completely wrong. I think having the opportunity to explore other religions and other religious practices can broaden one's perceptions and help a person come to terms with their place in the world. I like paulak's term "cafeteria-style religion," where you can pick & choose the parts of each faith that works best for you.
