At the beginning of Part Two, we read about the day Abigail and her sister were captured near their village in Africa. How do you think Abigail was able to find the will and the courage to survive?

Abigail’s sister jumped ship and drowned. As a survivor missing her sister she would punch herself in the face, striking her cheeks, and her eyes harder and harder until that memory and all memories were beaten back into the dark unreachable part of her soul. She also had a secret place half a mile up though the trees.

Abigail's loss of her sister makes her even more aware of the importance of survival. She must do all she can now to survive as a way of keeping her sister's memory alive as well as making a life for herself.

It is hard to understand how some people seem to natural survivors and others doomed to fail. Abigail would survive any situation as she had a strong will.

Abigail was a strong women who knew that to survive meant more than just to survive her new life. It was also a way to retain memories and the culture from which she had be forcibly removed. If she wasn't there to pass along the stories all of it would die with her and that was just not acceptable.

When you are in a dire situation you often do not have the ability to make a choice as to living or dying. Your adrenaline kicks in and your flight or fight instinct takes over. Your desire to live will overpower you and you will fight to live no matter what. She knew she had given up a lot - her boys - to take this chance at freedom and she was determined to make it thru.
