What were your theories about Gaelle's mysterious patient (Winter)? Did you perceive her as wise or dangerous?

I felt she was playing possum, pretending not to be a part of events and not speaking. I believed she knew what was going on. Gaelle was unknowingly drawn to her because they both shared powers, although Gaelle didn't realize her power yet. When it was disclosed that the old woman was Winter, then you knew it was part of the bigger picture— the passing on of power.

I agree with Marcia S. I felt she was much more than she wanted others to know she was. However, I was also stunned initially by her aggressive contact with Gaelle. That scene happened in the first 5 pages of the book and I wasn't familiar with Winter at that point, so I was shocked. After I learned more about Winter, I would have given her a very wide berth as she always seemed to be the most mercurial and explosive of all the lead female characters.

I got the impression that she was dangerous. As more of her behaviors were revealed, I got the sense of reincarnation of a strong deity. I'm not sure if she was malevolent or just trying to exist until she could move on. I sure wouldn't want to meet her in a dark alley at night!

I felt there was a connection between Winter and Gaelle and that Winter would not hurt her. If anything Winter would do all she could to protect Gaelle. Winter was wise in knowing her powers were long ago dissipated and she was looking for that one special person - Gaelle - who she could help to find her own special powers.
