What, if anything, did you learn from reading Remembrance? Did anything surprise you about the novel?

I learned more about the Haitian Revolution and loved that. I learned a bit more about the situation of slaves in New Orleans as well. I also liked reading about how the Quakers interacted with the "freed" slaves. I knew that many Quakers were a big part of the Underground Railroad, but never read about their interactions with freed slaves. I think this was a nice hopeful aspect of the story!

My learning from the book was more emotional than intellectual. The author didn't only tell us about events concerning enslaved people, she showed us what their lives were like. This novel made me feel what being enslaved must be like. My world fell away and I entered the world of Remembrance. That is the mark of a great work of fiction.
