An underlining theme of Cruel Beautiful World is about how we can control some things and prevent others, but sometimes we simply have to yield to life and let it happen. Do you agree with the author's position? Why or why not?

Yes I agree. It is called karma. I believe we only have so much control over our lives. We can try and shift the plan, but we somehow always wind up on the same path we were on. We just took a little detour. I don't know how many times I have tried to change things and I always end up at the place I started.

Yes, I agree. No one can control everything in their lives. Life happens and people and events are unpredictable at times.

I really truly realized this at 39 years old. I am female, mix, and GOP. I have danced with death so many times, I know and spend the holidays with his family. That is why I do not care about telling my age. With my forty birthday approaching, I think of the things that could happen. I had a lot of frustations. This book is another one that help me realized life happens and it is what is. I used to punish myself for the bad choices I made in the past. This book and the book, The One in A Million Boy, help me come to terms better. This book , Cruel Beautiful World, especially helps with the what if game. Meaning what if I did this instead, would my life be better. I love this book!

Yes, I also agree. There are some events that are simply beyond our control. Anything that involves someone else is not really under our control, because the other person's (or people's) decisions and feelings are always factors in what happens. We can control only our personal choices. Life events happen around us and we sometimes just need to "go with the flow".

Yes I agree. There is only so much that we have any control over, and the older I get the less it seems. We may think we have control and then life sweeps in and it is all over. I find the best motto is "Let go and let God".

I, too, agree. There is not much that we can control in our lives. How we act and react determines what will happen to us - karma, I believe is the name for that philosophy. I agree with reene in that the older I grow, the more I recognize my own lack of control with regard to my life. Live each day to the fullest, live each hour, each day, each age of my life - this has become my code of conduct.

Yes, 100% and the sooner we accept this the happier we are in life. The only things we truly control are the choices we make when presented options...and...even that can be extremely difficult at times.

We are not in control of our lives. We are sent to earth to live the most humane and creative way we can by God. Ultimately, He is in control. Although He does not wish anything but the best for us, we live in a broken and sinful world and bad things, things we cannot control often happen to us. We can learn from thee unfortunate situations, or we can choose to repeat the same errors again and again. But we cannot control the universe, we can only reflect and intelligently pick our courses of action and deal with the hand that life has dealt us.

At the end of the book, Charlotte realized that she had tried so hard to control everything, but that was not the way to go through life. She learned that control wasn't freedom, as she had thought, but rather it kept you from living. She seemed to come to admire Lucy's way of just going out and trying to make your life happen, taking risks. Somehow there has to be a balance. That is Charlotte's new challenge, as well as for us all.

I think there is a certain amount of our life we control and some we don't. There are a lot of things in your life that you do control - your attitude, work ethic, what you eat, if you exercise and take care of yourself, how you treat others, etc. Many of your decisions do control your life; however, you can't control other people. I have always favored the Serenity Prayer my mother has hanging in her house - grant "God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."

I think that the only person you can control is yourself. Of course life throws different things at us that we cannot control but how we deal with those circumstances is completely up to us. We may look back at how we reacted to a situation and not be happy with it but it was our response not someone else's.

Yes, I agree with other posts that some things are out of our control and that the best we can do is deal with our reactions to events. That's easier said than done sometimes but, for me, as long as I could see a window of hope, I've been able to maintain some calm in difficult situations in order to make a better response than I otherwise might have done.

Yes, but it is really hard for me to let go of that which I can not control.

Control of our lives is not in our hands. We have some choices and free will but we will end up the grand plan.

Alycet,

Aloha. Who you explain on your exact meaning of grand plan, please?
