Do you think Morel's and Sylvie's punishments fit their crimes? Why do you suppose Maud targeted Morel but not Sylvie?

I do. She may have targeted Morel more than Sylvie because she developed a closer relationship with Sylvie and Morel was more directly involved in the wrongdoings.

They got what they deserved, they ruined several people

Morel tried to kill her, so hs was a natural target - I'm not sure she understood Sylvie's involvement in the plot until the very end. As for getting what they deserved - I'd have preferred some sort of long term suffering - but that's a tough way to end a book. At least their plot did not succeed and they were punished.

Yes, but that part of the book seemed a bit over the top in melodrama. I'd have preferred them to get arrested and charged, and sent to prison for the rest of their lives... to see justice done in that way.

I think they got what they deserved and I think Sylvie's death enabled Maud to leave the country and move on.

They got what they deserved as a result of Maud's obsession with making them pay for what they did to her. Their greed led to their demise.

I agree with JL. I, too, would have liked it better if they had ended up in prison.

They got what they deserved. They'd been set to frame her from the very beginning. She was merely a pawn to them. I don't think Maud would have felt real freedom as long as they were alive.

Morel and Sylvie deserved to be caught. I didn't like that the Countess was going to wait until they got to America to ruin them. Morel killed two people, he deserved to be punished. I was surprised later when the murders haunted him. That made me think he had remorse and he probably shouldn't have died, but put in jail. Sylvie on the other hand didn't show remorse. She suggested that Maud loved her and that is why she didn't blame Sylvie for her downfall. That was interesting to me and explained in a way why Maud was so fixed on revenge. Maud loved someone she felt was frail and needed her and then was betrayed . That Sylvie was the planner seemed to be so much more of a betrayal and deserved punishment. I think Sylvie's suicide kept her from her just punishment.
