Maud's feelings for Sylvie

What do you think Maud's feelings are for Sylvie at the end of the book?

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

I wondered if Maud was romantically interested in Sylvie. She seemed to have intense feelings for Sylvie. I don't think she wanted to believe that Sylvie wanted her dead.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

Maud was so shocked when Sylvie stole the jewelry and so was I. It was the turning point when Maud began to have questions about the Morels.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

What started as pity and concern (because of the opium use) changed into an intense negative judgment, particularly when she realized Sylvie had plotted to murder her, although I'm not sure I'd characterize that feeling as hatred. I think there was an element of disbelief to Maud's feeling, bound up in the fact that she had cared so much for Sylvie initially and tried so hard to help her.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

I think she was so disappointed and more than a little heart-broken. Her deep connection for Sylvie was well-portrayed and likely so was acting on feelings of betrayal by someone she'd cared for so deeply. Romantic feelings? I'm not so sure. Maybe.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

It makes sense that Maud would feel more betrayed by Sylvie. She misrepresented herself and seemed needy at the beginning. Also Maud spent much more time with Sylvie than she did with Christian. It also seemed that Maud had a closer bond with women than men. I wondered whether Maud's relationship with Yvette when they left Paris turned romantic. Both didn't marry and lived together so it seemed very possible.

I got the feeling Maud had strong feelings for Sylvie and also wondered of Maud's relationship with Yvette.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

I think Sylvie's betrayal was harder on Maud than Morels. I don't think her feelings were romantic but she definitely cared for her and felt sorry for her

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

I thought Maud and Yvette were definitely a couple. I also thought she had a crush on Sylvie until Sylvie betrayed her. I think even then she had more trouble with revenge against Sylvie. She wanted to believe it was just Christian who betrayed her.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

I believe Maud really thought Sylvie liked her and the fact that she betrayed her was more hurtful than hatred. I did not pick up on a crush on Maud' part.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

I very much agree with nancyh's comment that Maud was truly shocked when Sylvie told her she was the one who planned the murder. Maud cared so much for Sylvie that she truly wanted to believe she was a pawn of Christian's who harbored no ill feelings for Maud.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

Maud was grateful to Sylvie and doing all she could to please her. She thought her station in life had improved as a result of helping Sylvie and sharing their outings. Her betrayal by Sylvie was much worse than Christian's as she thought she and Sylvie had a real bond and friendship. I don't think she had a romantic attraction to her.

RE: Maud's feelings for Sylvie

Maud saw Sylvie as the opposite of herself. Maud didn't see herself as beautiful. She didn't see herself as feminine or womanly. She saw Sylvie was gentle and weak, but also as interesting and charismatic. That is why Maud was drawn to her, she loved Sylvie for what she thought she was lacking in herself. It is because of this she didn't see the signs of the betrayal, even right up to the end.
