When Lucy says she "chose" to leave William, he says she's mistaken, and responds, "[W]hen does a person actually choose anything?" What do you think of his opinion? Do you agree?

I feel he may have meant that the choosing was based on circumstances and not what Lucy might have otherwise done. She didn’t choose to be married to a man who cheated.

It seems that William thought "choosing" is separate from responding to the antecedents and consequences of behavior. I believe in free will and I believe that we are capable of choosing, however, there are so many factors and expectations that affect our choices. I think William believed that Lucy had no choice but to divorce him because of the affairs. Yet, there was so much more that led to that decision since the day they married.

I agree with William that Lucy did not "choose" to leave him. She was compelled to leave him because of the circumstances. That said, I do believe there are circumstances in life where we have choices. If William had not been unfaithful and Lucy still left him, I feel that that would have been a choice.

This sounds like excuse-making to me. We all have choices to make. I think William is trying to slyly let himself off the hook by making it seem that his behavior was influenced by anything other than his selfish desire for sex with other women. In fact, in my experience, marriage is always about the choice to stay and remain loyal.

In my opinion, William was wrong. Lucy definitely choice to leave him. It was no spur of the moment decision. It wasn't just based on his infidelities, but on the life she was leading in this marriage, her feeling, her thoughts about the children involved. She definitely made a choice, she could have stayed and been the long suffering wife. She had matured and gained confidence in herself.

I think people make choices. Circumstances and actions may move people in the direction to stay or to leave, but I believe that Lucy made the choice to leave. I don't think it was an easy decision for her.

I completely disagree with William. People always have choices (as others have said). Even doing nothing is a choice. Even people who say they have no choice, no options, really mean they don't like the choices/options available to them.

William is making excuses and not taking responsibility for his actions and the resulting consequences. We always have choices, however difficult they may be.

I think that because William has always been allowed to be so self centered without considering the thoughts of others, he felt that Lucy should have allowed to continue his discretions and she be accepting of it. People have choices and Lucy made the right choice when she left William.
