RE: What are your feelings about Patricia as a mother?

I greatly admired Patricia as a mother. She lived very resourcefully by her wits and hard work, did not complain about her lot, showed her son the goodness in life, made the most of the circumstances. I especially liked her manner of gracefulness and respect towards others, showing people a measure of compassion that is truly lovely and speaks so well to a beautiful heart. She was unafraid to work at whatever would help the two of them, created a family out of an assortment of friends (some too who had odd luck),
and conducted herself with dignity.

For that period in America, she did what so many mothers did: worked hard, built a network, outsmarted a few foxes, etc. Unlike 95% of the other mothers doing exactly the same thing for their kids, she was blessed to live an environment that had sparkles in it ... all the time.

I loved the role she played in her son's life. What a great role model!

I think of Patricia as a mother just as her son does - an eternal fountain of lessons to be learned. She continued to demonstrate that throughout her final days.

I think Patricia was a wonderful mother and after reading this I wish I could have met her. She was a strong, compassionate, and caring woman and I thought this book enriched my life.

Honest to a fault. She shared with her son real life experiences that left lasting impressions. People, places and events were there to be cherished whether good or bad. The fact that they remained loving mother and son says more about their relationship than trying to describe Patricia's role as a mother. It all worked.

Pat had an open, honest, and factual relationship with Simon. Life is not always easy or plentiful, but we must look forward,. and work to improve it. Laughter is necessary to happiness. They laughed and shared the good and bad.

While certainly not the stereotypical mother, Patricia was a wonderful mother who created a world of places, people and events for her son that built a foundation of love and friendship that lasted until her final days. And, he has graced us by sharing those memories with us.

I'm surprised that no one has talked about her boundaries. Does anyone feel that there were boundaries lacking between mother and son?

I love her both as a person and a mother. She was far from conventional but loving and fiercly protective and fun! She gave her son a strong sense of family and an independence that suited his character. It's hard as a parent to be parental and also a person that your child can relate to. Kudos!!

I greatly admire Pat as a woman & a mother. She did so many wonderful things! I understand how Scott became the man he is! Life was not always easy for her, but she met it full force with charm, wit, determination. She lived life to the fullest, set a marvelous, loving example for Scott. I think his portrayal of her is accurate & not stretched by "rose-colored" glasses.

I agree with LeahReadsBooks because I also felt the boundaries between mother and son were not just blurred, but sometimes missing altogether. There were often things her son was too young to understand or make sense of and should not have been exposed to as a young child. She was a bit TOO open and honest with her son, perhaps to the point of being inappropriate. I did not feel the same positives ('greatly admire' or 'great role model') that have been said about Pat as a mother. She didn't know another or better way, obviously did not think she was 'over-sharing', and Scott turned out well. I do think she did the best she could (especially in that era) but they were lucky; things could have taken a very different path in that relationship.

I'm with antypam and LeahReadsBooks on this one. I would not ever fault Pat regarding her love of her son and her attempts to make the best of her situation, but I feel like "great role model" is an overstatement. Had Scott picked up on different cues - the multiple marriages, the partying with mobsters, for instance, his life might have been very different.
