Were there particular mother/son moments that affected you?

Were there particular mother/son moments – either in the author's memories or in the hospital room -- that affected you?

RE: Were there particular mother/son moments that affected you?

Doing bidding: The final scene of Scott Simon scurrying from the ICU as his mother's final hours hover so that he can pay on her behalf Linda (seamstress) and Maria (manicurist) because they have small children and work so hard is a siren call of Patricia's life because she fully understands economic struggle. Simon does the requested bidding because he knows that being a cog in the wheel is exactly what helps it to turn and he loves his mother.
Seeing: Patricia took young Scott to the Chicago Art Institute and in leaving she commented that they have to thank artists because they help us to see the world differently. What an intellectually strong lesson!
Luck and Compassion: Patricia gives a one dollar bill to a beggar wrapped in a blanket who snarls. She is gracious and tells him to get soup and keep the bill. "We're lucky - he (being unlucky) doesn't have to say thank you." What a lesson in giving to the less fortunate and appreciating what we have.

Dennis Prager is correct in observing that gratitude for small things leads to appreciation and that then brings us to happiness.

Every part of this book affected me. Having lost my father 2 years ago I think of the last days I spent with him before he was in the hospice and was unable to communicate. The days we spent before talking about life were something that will always stay with me. I was thinking of my mother and since reading this book we have become even closer.

I was struck by the closeness of mother and son. There didn't seem to be much that was off limits to discuss. As they talked about his mother's relationships with men -- particularly married ones -- I kept wondering how Simon dealt with that as a child/teenager.

I have to say that the entire book was like that for me. Each segment - each tweet - was priceless. Thank you Suzanner for pointing out the "doing bidding", "seeing" & "luck & compassion" points. Those were special; the singing together also. Pat did the hard work early on in Scott's life to make him special & lay down the foundation where this relationship could flourish. And he, in turn, gave back to her in a priceless way.

It is a marvelous memoir!
