I found more in this book than the love story!

I found the love story taking second place to the rest of the information given in the book. I learned more from this book on the Nazis and the Holocaust than any other I have read... I found myself wanting more and more information that the author wrote about. The love story was important...but I was drawn into more than just Isaac and Christine.

Did anyone else feel this way too?

The love story was complex (religious difference, wealth differences) but I also found situations that showed the other side of the story were the most enlightening. Christine said "Brutal acts only become war crimes if you lose." Now, that's an amazing piece of truth. Both sides of the story contain elements of brutality.

Yes. Yes!! What happened during the war in Germany at such places at Dachau and the other camps blows my mind! So inhumane! And that some like Stefan tried to get off being punished! That is even worse. I am glad that Christine did not let him do that!

I agree with comments before me that this is more than just a love story. I think it was the authors desire to tell some the stories she had heard from her family members, about the poverty, the hunger, the bombings, the sufferings that happened to everyone in large or small incidents and used the love story of Christine and Isaac as the center to weave her story.

Most assuredly, this novel offers much more than just a love story. Good books always are multi-faceted.

Absolutely. I thought that the love story was secondary to the story of what was going on during the war.

In agreement with other readers who found much more in the book. I know it was a central part of the book, but none of it would of mattered or taken place without all of the other elements in the book. There was so much more to the book then a love story. I hope some readers would not read it because they see it as "just a love story" book.

I agree thatit was much more than a love story. It was great to read about what went on from the Germans and Jews of Germany point of view and how they reacted to the events

What I found so interesting was learning about the War from the viewpoint of the family and the hardships they faced. The love story added to the story but wasn't the focal point.

I appreciated it much more because, as others mentioned, it taught history within the context of the lives of these fictional people who felt authentic. It makes the history feel more personal and the facts easier to identify with and remember if you come to associate a story with the otherwise dry facts. That's the strength of historical fiction, as long as the facts can be trusted.
