With the exception of small kindnesses from the medicine woman, Unci, Neha's appearance in the tribe provides Anne with friendship, affection, and explanation and education of the Cheyenne ways for the first time. Until that time she is friendless and has no-one who cares for her. They become close to the extent Neha refers to her as "sister," and admits she was ashamed for not coming to Anne's aid when being beaten at one point. She consoles Anne after Elizabeth's death. Things change after the Buffalo Skinner Massacre, when they are both rescued. While neither of them fares well with their "rescuers," as a "half breed" Neha doesn't even try to assimilate and this prevails to the end. It is Anne's relative who "tries to get near me," beats and ties up Neha when she runs and although Anne tries to council her, Neha is shell-shocked, left with her relatives, and they sadly bid each other good-bye.

I agree with Cynthia's comments.

What surprised me was the harsh way Anne was treated by her captors. I have read authentic accounts of captives and most of them were treated much better, adopted almost as members of the family. But these were probably different tribes who often captured whites to replace family members who were killed.

For those interested in reading more about Indian abductions, I highly recommend "The Captured: A True Story of Abduction by Indians on the Texas Frontier" by Scott Zesch.

I think that Neha helped Anne understand the ways of her captors & provided friendship at a time it was desperately needed. I think that Anne tried to do the same for Neha when they were freed & perhaps had they been allowed to stay in contact, then Neha may have been able to acclimate into or accept her new environment.

Neha was like a sister to Anne and made her experience more tolerable. Neha was the child of a captured woman so she had no personal experience of the white man’s world and could not begin to understand how to fit in. Anne had some previous experience of “civilization” up to her capture so she could manage to a degree.

I think that Anne's connection with Neha enabled her to deal with her captivity. Anne felt like Neha was her sister. After being rescued, Neha was unable to adapt to her white family's expectations and had, in my opinion, an emotional breakdown. Anne was set on rescuing her from her 'captivity' by her family and together they would get back to their Indian tribe where they would have a reunion with Anne's children.
