Anne and Libby both experienced the harsh climatic living of frontier life. For much of her captivity Anne was exposed to the elements and was often close to starving. She lived in fear of beatings and forced labor. While Libbie suffered somewhat from terrible weather, both hot and cold, and once almost lost her life (at Yankton) her life was exponentially more comfortable. Both were at the mercy and control of men psychologically although to varying extent; Anne physically as well. And both lived, again to varying degrees, with the anxiety, fear and vulnerability of war.

Neither were prepared for the difficulties they suffered in the frontier. Agree with Cynthia that both were at the mercy & control of men. Also, both learned to adapt & survive despite the hardships experienced.

As would be true for most women during that time, no matter their personal situation, all the important decisions in their lives were made for them by men. Libbie did get to pick her spouse but that was it.

Both Anne and Libby suffered many hardships but Anne's were forced upon her and Libby had the opportunity to choose her freedom from living on the prairie if she so wanted. I think Libby always knew her hardships would come to an end but Anne had no such assurances.

I honestly didn't see much similarity in their experiences. Anne had no choice in her life; she was a captive subjected to physical and mental abuse and deprivation, she lost her family to massacre, and then lost her children to white attitude. One could say that Libbie also had no choice, but I don't subscribe to that belief. She made the decision to marry Custer, she made the decision to follow him on most of his campaigns, and she made the decision to ignore his adultery.
