Olivia has a near-death experience, and it changes her forever. She thinks that she hears voices from beyond the world directing her actions. Do you think this is possible?

Olivia experienced a near death experience and it sounded very familiar. Then I remembered reading The Man Who Planted Trees:Lost Groves, Champion Trees, and an Urgent Plan to Save the Planet by Jim Robbins. He wrote about a nurseryman from Michigan, David Milarch, who also had a near-death experience and was inspired to begin cloning the champion trees of 826 different species. I would tend to question someone hearing voices, but I would be open to the idea. I would also highly recommend The Man Who Planted Trees. Just be sure you get the book by Jim Robbins. There is an earlier book with the same main title.

I do believe this is possible - when one has an intense internal connection, a great passion for someone or something, I believe that messages may come to that person to direct him or her. Perhaps those voices are not spoken aloud, but there is some unseen connection in the universe, much as Powers describes with trees talking to one another, that does exist and does reach the minds and hearts of those who may be listening.

do believe that this type of communication is possible, less so now in our busy, noisy lives, but I believe in this type of communication. I think we tend perceive this as intuition or sensation rather than direct communication. I think Nature is always sending us messages - we just don't hear them.

No, I don't think this is possible. I was pretty convinced she experienced some minor brain damage as a result of her near electrocution.

Some people are convinced that "voices" speak to them; however, I have never had such an experience. Do I think it's possible? Perhaps it is.

Olivia certainly believed she heard voices and did what they told her to do. They lead her to good outcomes until things went terribly wrong. I might doubt someone if they told me they heard voices but I would not ridicule them.

Emily's injury may have "rewired" her brain, but to her the voices were real and she trusted them. That seemed to be enough for her and her companions.
