Thank goodness no. I only see a great deal of it in the world.

I have had familial conflict and understand that when these situations arise in families that emotions can run quite high and have an increased intensity that may not occur with other relationships - especially those among siblings when one sibling is viewed as being more privileged and having received much more than the other.

Of course I have experienced familial conflict - cannot imagine a family that does not - but I've certainly experienced nothing to this degree. I don't know the characters in this trilogy from previous Iles work - or even if they exist for that matter - but I think I read that these Penn books are continuations of other works focusing on Penn Cage. I suspect those works talk more about him as a practicing attorney. I cannot imagine living a life like this family - like Penn Cage - and I'm grateful I do not have to do so.

Added five minutes later -

When I was younger, I sought the limelight to some degree. I felt that making a name for myself in the world meant being known, perhaps doing something tremendously important, leaving my name on a building or a book maybe. Thank goodness experience taught me that doing something like that did not 1) guarantee happiness, or 2) leave the world a better place. Seeing how power and position left many unhappy and damaged led me to be grateful for a quieter life and to recognize that success and satisfaction can be experienced in much quieter ways, too.

Sadly, I have had familial conflict. Sibling rivalry is alive and well with me and my brothers. I can relate to the priveileged of one over another. I don't think that ever truly goes away, even as we become older it is still there. Mississippi Blood just enforced that I am not the only one to experience this.

susiej - I agree completely with your statement about power and position. It often leads to unhappiness and damage of the powerful or those around them. A quiet life is sometimes the best life.

Thank heaven, no. But I can believe it is alive and well.

Family conflict, yes. Bigotry and corruption, no. I realize this is fiction and so is written to be bigger than life so we keep reading. But really, who could live a life full of the conflict and danger like Penn’s? And if you watch or read the news, you know the world is full of corruption and bigotry and worse, and you just hope it doesn’t touch you personally.

I am thankful that I have not; however, there is no question that such instances exist and all too frequently I am afraid.

Unfortunately, I believe that most of us have had some experience with familial conflict. For some of us the situation has been terrible. Yes, I have experienced such conflict and it can tear you apart.
Thankfully I have not had to experience bigotry or corruption similar to waht we see in this series.

Thankfully, nothing major like this book. All of this is all too familiar in today's news and our history. I buried most of the horrors that Greg Iles wrote about. When reading I would think this was impossible but then remember that "oh, yes this really did happen".

Fortunately I have not, but the world around me is terrifying. There is so much bad news and less and less upbeat stories on all media outlets.

No, and unless one is living an extremely gothic life, I doubt that even 1/10th of the scenarios in the trilogy could happen in real life. But it was a wild ride!

The violence prevalent in this story was not part of the northern Midwest. However, I do recall that many towns did not allow blacks to move and live in the community. I never saw a non-white person until my early twenties when I started traveling. Very sad to miss the diversity in my youth.
