The ending was fitting, but I still felt a little sad. As I finished the book, my husband looked at me and asked if it ended the way I thought it would. I told him that it did not, that it was the right ending but that I kind of felt like I received a punch in the gut.

Eva's final chapter was not what I anticipated. I hated it, really. Then I realized it was a way to allow Claire to go on and live her life without constantly feeling guilty. I was aware that Julie Clark had used time in an unusual way which should have led me to know that Eva didn't survive. Claire's story progresses from the present into the future. Eva's story progresses from the past to the present, but no future. An unusual way to tell their two stories but definitely a hint to the ending.

I was disappointed because I thought Eva was on the brink of finding herself and getting her life straightened out. But in another sense, it was a fitting end. We are all given different paths to take in life. When she made the decision to make drugs in college, that was the beginning of her walk down the wrong path to a bad end.

I felt somewhat surprised and sad at the ending. I was hoping the early reference about seeng Eva in the pink sweater and the inference to Eva feeling she could walk right out of the jetway without being noticed held true at the end, so seeing what actually happened was a shock to me.

i was surprised and initially unhappy that she didn't get a chance at a new life. In many ways she was the more interesting character and the one who had more cards stacked against her. On the other hand she had manipulated Clare into the switch and led her to ta dangerous situation.
In retrospect i felt that Julia Clarke had given the reader a big clue by not bringing Eva's story into the future as she did with Clare. Very clever.

It was a surprising twist, and provided a thought-provoking ending. I appreciate the author's skill in keeping readers wondering until the very end. For every victim who is able to escape her circumstances and start over, how many more never get that chance? Eva's story creates great sympathy throughout the book, making her loss all the more moving at the end.
