Eva watches a cat kill a bird at a birdbath, and felt the universe was sending her some kind of message. "The only problem was, she didn't know whether she was the cat or the bird." Which do you think she was?

RE: Eva watches a cat kill a bird at a birdbath, and felt the universe was sending her some kind of message.

I think Eva was the cat for awhile but was destined to be the bird in the end. She was on her way to escape, but she was running from a situation that was hard to escape. If Dex had found her, he would have killed her to stop her. That little piece in the book was a good analogy. It jumped out at me when I read it. She needed to go into the witness protection program. Without that she was at the end of the line.

I too was struck by this scene of life and death playing out in a birdbath. It clarified the consequences that would await her if she didn't make the right choice.

Interesting metaphor and appropriate to the plot--and a very good question. Eva was not defeated by the situation and came up with a pretty amazing way to save herself, so she is definitely not the bird. But she is also not the cat. She is not stalking her prey. The fact that the plane crashed was just bad luck. I thought perhaps Rory and his wealth had something to do with the plane going down, but that does not seem to be the case.

I agree with that comment! I was wondering if Rory had something to do with the plane going down since he was violent with other women, seeming to stop at nothing to have his own way. Eva was never really the cat since Dex was always on the prowl, watching her. Eva may have hoped to be in control in a cat-like way, but she never really was.

I never saw Eva as the cat; she never deliberately tried to harm anyone. I also think she would have been the bird (i.e., dead) had she hung around.

Cat or bird?

Eva was a survivor so between the two she is the cat because she wouldn’t left herself so vulnerable as did the bird. She couldn’t have foreseen the plane. I just have to say I was Devastated Reading the epilogue Julie Clark fooled me I was convinced she got off the plane. I still feel the loss thinking that she had finally got a fresh start. I think when they make the movie she will live.
