I think that she meant that whatever life has handed you there is no gain in spending too much time in that moment. One has to accept what has happened and then move forward in your life and take forward only the lessons learned.

We have to get through the hard times. We all have them - it's part of life and it is what defines you. If you try to take the easy way out you don't develop strength and the knowledge that you need to overcome hardships in life.

This I believe to be very true. When life presents us with difficult circumstances our tendency is to avoid the pain. As a young widow I learned that one cannot begin to heal until the pain is experienced in all of its ugliness and then ultimately released. And of course, this is the last thing we want to do. Avoiding the pain only postpones it. Eventually it will demand to be felt.

It is so often hard to move through anything. It is easier, or seems so at the time, to either hide, or pick a different path. I think Sister Bernadette was trying to tell the children that they would meet many obstacles in their lives and the best way to deal with them is to accept, work hard, and hope for a good outcome.

Sister Bernadette was a woman who wanted the children to feel that they could overcome obstacles rather than let life overwhelm them. It is a great way to look at life. We all feel overwhelmed sometimes.
