Were you surprised by the twist at the very end of the book?

Were you surprised by the twist at the very end of the book? Do you think Camille and Olivier's secret is understandable? Is it forgivable?

I was surprised and want to know more. Like does the daughter look like his wife? Will he be suspicious at all?

Of course. There appeared to be so little in common with any of the characters, and yet, life is not always as it appears. We do not know how our actions may affect others...but we should consider this.

I expected A twist, given the way the stories seemed to move toward each other as the book progressed, but not necessarily THE twist that actually appeared. And it was a great one!

I became suspicious towards the end of the book about this, but it still had the ability to surprise me. I wish the meeting had taken place however; I was disappointed at the ending and wanted that part of the book to go further. I feel like the story ended before it should have.

Early on I knew that one of the little girl's would be Elodie. After Olivier returns from the war and they continued to live such crazy lives apart together I realized it had to be their daughter, Marie. I did not know how they would have found the baby but his being in the choir solved that issue. Still, if he were in the choir he would have had to have known whose baby the little girl was--that just didn't ring true. So, no, I don't forgive them for not returning the child to its father.

I did like the twist at the end! I was surprised about Elodie! And I liked how all the characters were connected to each other.

I agree with Olivia and Katherinep. I enjoyed the twist but wished to see it fully played out. I felt Jean Paul deserved a completed story. I don't find Olivier and Camille's secret forgivable at all. Understandable in that I can see how they came to have the baby and I can see how their selfishness would enable them to take an action that would have such profound and deleterious effects on another human being

I was glad that Elodie had not been killed in the bombing. The different characters were somewhat connected at the end but the future was still left for the reader to imagine.

I was, somewhat, though I probably shouldn't have been. All these characters were entwined in some way. But I loved it!

I enjoyed it and had suspected as we got closer to the ending; I was sad for Guillame, though. I had hoped he would have been able to find joy in his life with Suzanne and/or Arielle.

I loved it! I was totally surprised. And then I found myself getting worried, like, uh-oh, what's going to happen next? It's Jean-Paul's child, but her parents are other people...and then I decided, you know what? It's a perfect ending. Let it be. I don't have to decide what happens next, I can just enjoy it!

Surprise Ending

Yes, surprised and disappointed. We might have had at least one happy ending. Still, imagination can fill in the blanks nicely.

I agree with Peggy H. the ending was an opening for the reader to continue the story in their own mind, I would like to believe that Jean Paul somehow finds peace rather that the "fresh sorrow" the author sees for him.

I was surprised and a bit disappointed that Olivier and Camille kept the baby instead of trying to locate the rightful parent. Their selfish action did disturb me.

I likewise suspected there would be a twist. We do not know if Olivier and Camille tried to find the child’s family. It is doubtful, but you would hope there was some effort to that end.

Dramatic irony: Elodie

I loved the ending! I was wondering all the way through how all of the characters would come together, and of course they do. But then the ending projects into a future development beyond the denouement: Will the characters be further involved? The brush with fate that we all may experience is so enticing.
