I really liked it. I thought it was satisfying, realistic and hopeful. I thought each of the main characters had moved through tragedy and crises to grow and gain more self awareness. And love, in all it's wonderful combinations was clearly present.

It was a good ending .... probably a much better ending than a beginning. I had a tough time getting involved in the first pages of this novel.

I really felt the ending was over done. The torture, the reliving of each individuals horror. It was the ending of a very sick individual and I really feel most of our soldiers, no matter how much trauma they faced, would not put themselves through this.. most would see it for what it was. They whole scene of fighting for the "heart" and the burning of the body , no matter how symbolic, took away from the serious topic of the book.

Overdone and irrelevant to the theme of healing.

I agree with the responders that felt it was overdone.....and didn't provide a satisfactory ending.

The actual ending of the book was very interesting to me. At first I was surprised that it was so open-ended. I guess I wanted a happy ending for everyone involved. But upon reflection I thought it was pretty realistic in that a step was made toward healing - King seemed better and Ben seemed better, and Becca seemed more forgiving and more willing to try to maintain these two relationships - but that the healing couldn't be wrapped up in a nice, neat package. So, although it didn't have a complete resolution, it did end on a note of hope - which I really liked.

Kim, I totally agree with your response. I felt their willingness to go beyond their fears and defenses. To me that showed true character development and their love for each other.

I thought it was overly hopeful. The death of the CO released them from their past? Really? Just like that they were "all better." Why should Becca trust Ben? I just thougth the whole thing very unrealistic.

Unrealistic certainly describes it. I hope we have better means for treating our returning soldiers. Anything would be better than more violence. A cult in the middle of nowhere?

Unfortunately I never really made it to the end of this book. I rarely make it 3/4 of the way through a book without finishing it but I found the whole Kleos scene bizarre and disconnected from the rest of the story and so the longer that went on the less engaged I was in the book and I ended up not caring how it ended. I think this is too bad because I liked the book up to that point.

I agree with Kim above. I felt the treatment at Kleos was really very unrealistic . I would certainly hope that we have a better way today to treatment the soldiers returning with PTD It is a real problem in today's world and I feel sure there are no "happy endings" just adjustments to be made on everyone's part.

After most people left Kleos is when I liked the book again. I agree the ending was hopeful, which I like. It didn't wrap it up so we don't know exactly what's going to happen to each of the main characters. But it seems like they want to work on being a better people.

This book went in so many different directions that by the end I did not really care what happened to the characters. I just wanted it to be OVER!

I was glad that Becca was strong enough to go to Oregon on her scholarship and better herself. If her husband can get help perhaps they will get back together but she will take care of herself first. I was not surprised though because she had spent most of her life without the emotional support of her parents.

Very unrealistic. I read it to the end but felt relieved that I was finally finished.

I liked the ending and the beginning - it was the in between that left me a little empty and unconvinced.

I have to agree, bettyt. I'm sorry I haven't been able to give this book a better review, but it was tedious at best. Along with unrealistic. And I'm not one to like my fiction tied up with a neat little bow at the end.
