Did knowing the Amanda Knox trial outcome influence you?

I've been wondering whether Ms. DuBois might have adhered a little too much to the Amanda Knox trial. It seems that my friends who believed she was innocent think that Lily was also innocent...and vice versa. Do you think the book might have been more effective if there was a little LESS of the real-life Amanda parallels?

I thought about the Amanda Knox trial throughout my reading of Cartwheel. I tended to compare and contrast the stories as I went along. I believe that Amanda Knox was innocent always have. Most of the time I also thought Lilly was innocent. There were times however when Lily seemed guilty. I think the author deliberately made this ambiguous.

I didn't know much about the Knox trial, so it didn't influence me much.

Even though it was on TV a lot I didn't pay a lot of attention to the trial. I really couldn't comment on Amanda Knox's trial at all so it didn't influence me at all.

I think I did a decent job keeping as much of the Knox trial out of my reading as I could but I'm sure some of it was stuck in my head. I just wasn't consciously aware of it. It's difficult not to compare it, considering the drama and attention of the Knox story. It was so shocking and unusual. Plus, the international element, the differing cultures, etc., which added to the complexity.

In a way, it did. Mostly in terms of ambiguity, how Knox's first trial was unfair, but did that mean she was innocent? The way Eduardo went about determining Lily's guilt by trusting his gut instincts helped to understand the way the Italian prosecutors were so tough on Amanda. I enjoyed identifying elements that mirrored Knox's experience, and those that were imagined by duBois.

I did not follow the Know trial closely - did know the outcome. But this did not influence my reading of this book. What did influence me more was what I have learned over the years is how others often think of Americans, especially when in their country.

I was really hoping that the author wouldn't follow the Amanda Knox outcome (guilty but then overturned). I was hoping that something would come out and she would be acquitted, or she would confess. I felt the end was rushed.

I rather liked the ambiguity at the ending, the sense that she could have done it, or might have done it but who knows for sure? It really worked...for me.

The ambiguity at the end parallels the ambiguity of the Knox case. I felt as though this book was just a stolen story. It really bothered me.
