Maddox Wagner tells Everly: "....The idea that surviving brings everyone to a new and better place is a lie told by people who need the world to make sense." Do you agree with this? Have you or a loved one been through something that makes this statement ring true or false?

RE: Growth From Survival Depends

I, like many, have survived a harrowing experience and I believe that survival brings you to a new place. Is it a better place? That would need to be based on each individual’s experience and their method for survival.

I don’t agree that survival brings everyone to a better place (although I wish it did). Where a person ends up after a life-changing experience depends on how they perceive and address the situation. Those who find the silver lining in a tough experience are likely to end up in a better frame of mind.

I agree with Gabi. Although I have never experienced such a life or death experience, I absolutely believe that surviving such an experience would change a person in some way. How the survivor processes the event, and what kind of support system they have, would likely affect how they cope and emotionally "survive".

This remark by Maddox intrigued me and I wrote it down. I also wrote down a remark by Augusta: "Oh, Lamar, how will we survive the surviving?" What I think it all boils down to is: Coping with tragedy, grief, horrible life experiences is something one does. You take a deep breath, and resolve that you will make it through whatever disaster is befalling you, and that resolve carries you through it.

I do. Surviving will certainly bring someone to a new place, but whether it is a better place depends on the survivor and how they process and assimilate the defining event and their survival.

I don’t know that it is a better place per say but it definitely brings you to a new place in life and changes your perspective. It’s a little optimist to think it’s always better. Many dreams are also shattered, innocence dies in life altering events.

Based on my personal experience, I do not believe surviving brings you to a new and better place. It brings you to a different place, one you have to adjust to and learn to live with.

I think surviving something inevitably changes a person. Not necessarily for good or bad or even better, just different. Things like a different perspective, attitude or how someone interacts or reacts with others. Life just changes a person.

The tale offered here proves that the statement is right. We have Charles who survived to become the Red Devil. He was certainly not in a better place. He took out his anger as he brought Africans in horrible conditions to become slaves. There is a quote on the book that I will paraphrase" "Charles did not survive surviving".

I agree that it depends on the person - I don't believe it brings you to a "better" place but definitely a "different" place as the book certainly points out in terms of Charles.
