Do you think Floss's flashbacks to her past gave you more insight into the three women's present situations?

Yes I liked the flashbacks. She did what she did to save the baby and obviously had to leave England. I believe when a child is adopted he or she should be told the truth at a fairly young age but understand that basically Floss could be charged with kidnapping this child so had to be very careful about telling her the truth when she was younger. Wow what a secret to keep for such a long time.

I agree that the flashbacks helped give us the backstory and insight into Floss and her relationship to her daughter. Not getting the whole backstory at once helped build suspense in the story as well. It was interesting to find out how Floss and Grace became a family, too bad Grace didn't know about her past earlier in her life.

I think that Floss' flashbacks definitely enhanced the story and I did find these to be fascinating. I think this was THE most interesting part of the story. Floss was the woman who started as a midwife to begin with and this led to her daughter's and grandaughter's interest in midwifery.

I love flashbacks which takes you to the middle of the action at that time, they are an integral part of this story as this way we can understand Floss decision to leave England with this tiny baby, it also explains her difficulty in answering Neva’s questions about coming to a strange country with a baby and not knowing anybody.

Hepworth did an outstanding job with the flashbacks. She provided us with just enough information each time. I found myself looking forward to Floss's flashbacks while reading the book. The story wouldn't have been nearly as engrossing without the flashbacks.
