Did you have any guesses as to what Floss's secret was? Did your predictions change as the story was revealed?

As Floss tells the story that she has been hiding bit by bit throughout the novel did you have any guesses as to what the secret would ultimately be? How did your predictions change as the story was revealed? Did the truth surprise you, or were you able to figure it out?

Initially I saw a range of possibilities. By the time I was abut 60% through the book I had figured out she ran with the baby - and that Grace was not hers. I just wasn't sure of the circumstances.

I guessed about 40% through that Grace was not her child. My predictions did not change, and I found that her attitude toward Grace helped me 'guess' the outcome.

I did figure out early on what Floss's secret was but it certainly added to the flow and anticipation in the story trying to figure out how and when she was going to tell her daughter and granddaughter.

I had early suspicions of Floss's secret but that didn't interfere with my feelings about the characters and how they related to one another.

I felt that the story was very predictable. Happy endings for everyone usually isn't the case. There wasn't enough tension in the plot to have real surprises.

My guess at the beginning, given Bill's flirtation with Floss, was that he had raped her. The reality was harsher to me, because the pain was consistently increasing for both Elizabeth and her friends. Her pregnancy must have been a nightmare because she couldn't eat enough to sustain herself.

I enjoyed the book, but I agreed with Retired Reader, NE - everything was tied up in a nice little bow at the end.

I thought the same as Savanna, that Bill had raped her. I did find her initial reaction to Bill a little puzzling, however, and that bothered me.

i did surmise that she wasn't the real mother. I also felt everything was tied up too neatly and the book seemed contrived to me.

It took me a little while to figure it out. Then I realized that Grace was not her biological daughter, but didn't realize it was Elizabeth's child until a little bit further on. I also thought that Bill had possibly gotten Floss pregnant due to his non discreet comments throughout. He was a very disturbing character.

I guessed Grace was Elizabeth's as soon as her pregnancy was revealed. I enjoyed the story quite a bit, but was not surprised by any of the developments.

I believed that the baby was hers and Bill’s, a one night trill which she then regretted so much that she ran with the baby two weeks after giving birth where no one would know who she was.

Yes, I knew there was a secret, but my idea of what happened changed as the book went along. It all came together when Grace was born.

At first I did think that Floss had been raped by Bill (or somehow compromised) but it wasn't long into the book that I figured out what really happened, especially since Floss mentioned that she thought she was interested in women rather than men.

I, like most others guessed that she was not the biological mother of Grace and felt Bill was involved somehow. However, I didn't guess the details of what actually took place until it was revealed later on in the story. I did enjoy reading the book and thought the author wrote an interesting book.

I too thought that the baby was her's & Bill's. I would've been disappointed had that been the case. I mean...I'm not happy that Bill was so horrible to Elizabeth but I just didn't want to read a book about a woman who had an affair with her friend's husband.

I actually thought that Bill has charmed Floss and that Grace was Floss and Bill's child. As his nature was revealed, I didn't want the book to take an ugly turn with Floss and Bill. I was glad the story progressed the way it did in regards to who Grace's biological parents were.

Initially I thought that Bill had raped Floss and Grace was the result, but then I came to believe that Grace wasn't Floss's child. I did not guess the exact circumstances until they were revealed (maybe I'm slow!). It took courage for Floss to set off to a new country with a newborn child who wasn't hers, but for whom she assumed full responsibility. That demonstrated the kind of love that makes a family.

Add me to the readers who thought that it was an instance of rape. I didn't think that Grace wasn't her child. Grace was a unique person. Floss loved Grace as she had loved Elizabeth. The courage in that time take to bring Grace home to her parents & then travel to the U.S. was amazing.

I wholeheartedly agree with tracyb, the courage and strength of character it took to follow through with taking Grace was astounding and beautiful.

I questioned whether Grace was actually Floss's baby or at the very least she had been the product of a rape.
