What’s the most ridiculous beauty regimen you ever underwent?

From the perspective of a twenty-first century reader, the hairshellac system that Skeeter undergoes seems ludicrous. Yet women still alter their looks in rather peculiar ways as the definition of “beauty” changes with the times. Looking back on your past, what’s the most ridiculous beauty regimen you ever underwent?

Yogurt smeared on my face and fresh cucumber slices on my eyelids.

I had liposuction on my thighs and abdomen resulting in a week long hospital stay including a central line in my chest area! It definitely was not worth the stupid health risks that I took to be thin again.

I remember my aunt giving me a home permanent when I was young, and probably had no say in the matter. My hair was thick and straight but took that curl--yikes! Mostly I remember that horrible smell!

Sleeping (or trying to) with my hair in big old hard rollers - the size of orange juice cans!

I slept with lots of mayonnaise on my over-processed hair to "condition" it! Yuck!

After unsuccessfully trying to iron my own hair, I resorted to using HUGE rollers to straighten it. I even managed to sleep in them, cannot imagine doing that now!

My father had a fit one afternoon when he walked into the kitchen and found me with my hair spread across the ironing board and my friend wielding an iron. And let's not forget sleeping in those big wire rollers and "spoolies".

There is nothing like that home perm smell- it was awful.
The look was something too- nothing like a 5 foot tall white girl with an afro!

I have very straight hair and used to pursue curl! When I was in college in the 70s, my room mate's mom had read an article in her women's magazine about a new way of setting a perm and I thought I needed a perm so I became her guinea pig. She rolled my ear length hair into the curlers while it was dry, applied the smelly solution to each curler and then we waited for 20 minutes for the "magic". What a disaster! Each individual hair seemed like it had been bent into zig-zags (not a single curl) so the result was that I looked like I'd been plugged into an electrical socket. Definitely NOT a good look! I decided after that to never try for curly hair again.

josellek -- that's funny. I have naturally curly hair so during the 60s put smelly solution on my hair to make it straight. Not sure what kind of chemicals were in that stuff and it made my hair straight but it was dry and brittle after I used it.

The permanent machine that was in beauty parlors(what they were called in the "olden" days).
They were on a stand with a cylinder at the top. Coming out from that were wires which were heated
and attached to your hair. It looked like a robot from outer space & I was it's victim.

Also, does anyone remember "spoolies". They were little rubber curlers resembling a little wine glass &
we twirled our hair around the "stem" and then brought the cup part down and over the bottom. I looked like I was wired for sound.

Now I keep my hair short & wash and air dry.

BTW, this is my first post and I am happy to be here!

I also spent my college years pressing my hair straight on an ironing board -- and I would still be doing it if I had an ironing board :). I've always said that if I had only had straight hair in high school in the 60s, I would be an entirely different person today. Being cursed instead with very short (by parental dictate) red hair only contributed to my general hopelessness as an acceptable human teenager. But I got over it . . . kind of . . . .

I dyed my hair when I was in my 20s and when I sat in the sun, it turned a bright orange. I have never touched my hair again with dyes or anything else. I'm now 69 and my hair looks great in natural gray.
