Why do you think Jackson was drawn to Cussy Mary?

I think Jackson was drawn to Cussy Mary by her beauty, her love of learning, her independence and her humility. She was totally unaware that she was attractive or that her other qualities were so rare. She did not flirt with him like the other women did. Jackson’s own background made him appreciate her unique qualities.

Jackson had traveled and worked outside the area and had a wider world view. He recognized a kindred spirit who appreciated good literature. He could look at her and see her for the beauty she was - inside and out. I laughed out loud when discussing her unusual name he said, "I didn't think it was because of your mouth," but if anyone had a right to swear it was Cussy Mary.

How many relationships have been started with a discussion of a book? I know of 3, including mine.

Jackson was drawn to Cussy because she was literate, knowledgeable, brave, modest, kind and a kindred spirit. He appreciated her as a person he could share ideas with. She was unique and beautiful, and he loved everything about her.

I think Jackson, having traveled beyond the hollows and mountains was much more accepting of differences. He was attracted to her beauty, of which she was unaware, but I think he was drawn to her kindness, her education, her love of books, but mostly her independence and spirit.

Her beauty attracted him first. What drew him in were her fine qualities. She was intelligent, sweet, and full of love and compassion for others. Cussy Mary was 100 % natural.

I think he was drawn to her generosity toward others and her intellect. I agree with the others who have said that his travel likely exposed him to a wider diversity of people, allowing him to appreciate Cussy for who she was rather than judge her solely by her looks.

I think he was amazed when she could discuss books with him and he saw not just a blue woman, but an intelligent attractive woman.

Jackson was open-minded and independent. He had a wider view of the world than the narrow-minded people of Troublesome Creek. He saw and admired the intelligence and strength that Cussy possessed. It was the person Cussy was that mattered to him, not her color.

Jackson could see Cussy’s beautiful heart. He took time to know her. He had been outside Troublesome Creek. His world life experiences weren’t limited. Cussy had all the qualities he was looking for in a partner.

Because he sees that she is smart and a fellow book lover, even more importantly is good and kind.
