Why does Josie react differently to Klara's behavior when Josie is meeting with her peers compared to when Klara goes to Morgan Falls with the Mother?

Klara is less than cooperative at Josie’s interaction meeting with the girl’s peers, but there are no repercussions afterwards. When Klara goes with the Mother to Morgan Falls, however, Josie becomes angry and distant with Klara. What do you make of Josie’s reactions?

Josie is struggling with her adolescent identity and in the company of peers is perhaps unwilling to show her dependency on Klara's company. Lacking friendships formed from everyday interactions, Josie is no less susceptible to peer pressure among school friends. Determined not to show weakness, from her physical ailments or her emotional state, Josie snubs her close companion in favor of a social set.

Josie was jealous of her mother’s positive attention to Klara with the trip to Morgan Falls. They did something Josie couldn’t share. Josie was comfortable with her role as the special one. When She was around her peers, also teenagers, it was understood that AFs were inferior. Klara’s insubordination was not an unexpected action.

RE: Why does Josie react differently to ...

After the meeting with peers, Klara correctly concluded that Josie, and people in general, "often felt the need to prepare a side of themselves to display....". Josie reacted as she did in the meeting to fit in with her peers. And afterwards, she thought no more about her thoughtless remark. The Morgan Falls incident was different. Josie perhaps saw Klara might take her place in the family without too much effort-----an artificial Josie, yes, but one, most importantly, who wasn't sick. All of Josie's frustrations with her condition must have overwhelmed her that day.
