How do the events of the novel comment on the value of nature to the health and well-being of humanity, and even to nonhuman beings?

The novel engages in an important conversation about the harm that is being inflicted on the planet through the symbol of the Cootings Machine. How do the events of the novel comment on the value of nature to the health and well-being of humanity, and even to nonhuman beings?

RE: How do the events of the novel ...

The sun is almost another character in the novel. Certainly, Klara sees it as another entity in her world to study, understand, and entreat. Klara is confident of the sun's power, and it does have a beneficial effect throughout the book. Contrast the sun to the novel's world filled with technology, pollution and human loneliness. Children learn from oblongs and must be taught how to interact with others in an artificial setting. Adults are "substituted" for artificial workers. We see the effects of a disappearing natural world and it isn't pretty.
