According to Hương, proverbs are the essence of Vietnamese wisdom, passed orally from one generation to the next, even before the written Vietnamese language existed. Two examples are Trong cái rủi có cái may (Good luck hides inside bad luck) and Ác giả ác báo (Cruelty dispensed, cruelty returned). Do these proverbs ring true for you? Were there other proverbs that resonated with you as particularly true or meaningful?

I loved the proverbs that they used in speaking with each other. I found one I particularly liked- "Soft and persistent rain penetrates the earth better then a storm". I think this is so true in many life circumstances.

I enjoyed the proverbs as well. The one that comes to mind is "Fire proves gold, adversity proves men."

I loved the proverbs and found myself pausing after reading each one to think about their meanings in my own life. These proverbs provide such a rich source of wisdom for this culture to pass on through eternity as well as a gift for individuals reading this book! They are timeless.

The proverbs served as an inflection point in the text. It highlights the fact that every culture has a legacy of understanding the reality around it. Proverbs are unique to each culture and yet universal in the truth it reveals.

I really appreciated the proverbs and read them over several times to get their true essence and wisdom. I allowed myself to break from reading at those points and focus on the proverbs' meanings and thought about how the proverbs were relevant in my life.

I liked all of them especially "Difficulty gives light to wisdom"and "He who sows the wind will reap the storm."

I felt they really helped understand the Vietnamese culture & were beautiful unto themselves. I loved that she made these part of the story.

I thought the inclusion of proverbs made for a richer story and helped me to understand Vietnamese culture more. Just noticed this is how glenw feels too!
