Many of the characters in The Mountains Sing experience terrible things, and some of them must make difficult choices. Each of them handles their experiences differently. The Son ca helps Huong on her journey. What other objects, memories, people, or conversations help each character to endure and recover? RE: What objects, memories, people, or ...

I grew up with a grandmother that lived with us for extended periods of time. The lessons she taught me are unmeasurable. Huong's relationship with Dieu Lan brought back many good memories. I thought it was so special that they could share so many of their feelings and support each other.

RE: What objects, memories, people, or ...

The tether of this book was familial memories.
The stories that Huong's grandmother would tell her to keep connected and close to a family so separated by war.
The carved wooden bird that Huong's dad made for her representing her hope to see her father again. I would have liked a bit more resolution for her with her father's memory, but I loved that the author would divvy out letters and appearances all throughout the novel to keep a tether to the past stories of the Grandma.

RE: What objects, memories, people, or ...

I do not have happy memories from the stories told. They are mostly very sad and tragic. I am determined to make better stories for my grandchildren. This is the greatest gift I can give them.
